The miniature-scale adventures of Norbi, the mischievous 12-year-old son of a pious shop owner in the 1962 mining town of Esch are like thousands of similar childhood memories from young and old, making the film a nostalgic trip down memory lane.

Adapted by Luxembourg film critic and occasional producer Viviane Thill and French writer-director François Dupeyron, the film is almost entirely spoken in the Luxembourgish dialect, adding an authenticity to the proceedings. Norbi’s parents are essentially proper citizens who run a small stationery shop, are appropriately god-fearing (some of his father’s clients include nuns and priests) and endlessly worried about the education of Norbi and his older sister Josette in a time that saw the flowering of readily available comic books, rock music and cigarettes.

All of these commodities and more are strictly off-limits for the siblings, courtesy of a small, church-approved booklet on child-rearing that is strictly imposed by their father. Despite its sometimes grotesque characters, the film's true nature is gentle throughout, because its point-of-view never strays too far from the impish Norbi.
